What are some "keys to happiness."

Get Fit to Live

What are some keys to happiness?

By Audrey Muhammad
What are some keys to happiness?  Happiness is often that ever alluding feeling that we are constantly in search of since the day we are born.  Although it is a common belief that a person who is “always smiling” may be deemed “happy,” but that is not always the case.  It is a person that is filled with joy and gratitude.  Did you know that some of the keys to happiness can be found in the book, How to Eat to Live, Book I?  How can we “always be happy?”  As I was reading over my How to Eat to Live, Book I in my MGT studies, I ran across this “pearl of wisdom.”  The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said, “Allah (God) has brought us this knowledge, in the Person of Master Fard Muhammad.  Believe in Him, obey and follow His teachings, and you will always be happy”(How to Eat to Live, Book I p. 76-77).  Wow…

If we believe in HIM, we would strive harder to obey Him and follow HIS teachings.  What has He taught us?  He has taught us the best of foods to eat including fresh fruits and vegetables, navy bean soup, whole wheat bread and pure milk.  He has encouraged us to have “proper food for thought.”   “If we do not have the proper food for our way of thinking, we still cannot enjoy peace, good health, joy and gladness of heart”(How to Eat to Live, Book I p. 57).   What did he just describe?  Happiness.

Do you know what else can contribute to our happiness?  Having a fit and healthy body can also contribute to our happiness.  I am not talking about everyone being a size 2, I am talking about “you being your best you!”  I am talking about us not comparing ourselves, but accepting our responsibility to be a healthy and beautiful reflection of our creator.  When we exercise, such as walking or dancing, we help to reduce stress, which in turn, helps us to look younger.

In the introductory letter to the Study Guide, “Self Improvement: The Basis for Community Development,” Minister Farrakhan said, “Each student, after studying the principle under analysis, must then analyze self and critique self.”    In essence, we should examine areas in our life where we are unhappy(family, work, health etc.) and see if there is an area where we can be more obedient.   Then, strive to increase our submission in that area, step by step.  As The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad said in How to Eat to Live, we simply need to “live right, think right, eat right, and do right.  You will not have to die to go to heaven to be like angels; you will be like them while you live” (44).

May Allah Bless us all with peace, love, health, wealth and happiness.

“Tune into the Power Within”

A Virtuous Conversation with Mother Tynnetta Muhammad
“Tune into the Power Within”

Virtue Today(V) – As Salaam Alaikum.  Thank you Mother Tynnetta, for agreeing with this interview. My first question is:   In what ways can proper diet help us to be “in tune” and what are some other things we can do to increase our peace of mind?

Mother Tynnetta-Well, that’s a very good question.  You are what you eat and we have heard that saying for eons.  Through the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad we cannot put more stress on it than to say it is the RIGHT way that coordinates with our function to produce a better a cellular structure of our body.  It renews the cells within our body if we eat “live” foods.  We should eat a mixture of steamed vegetables without letting all the vitamins escape into the air by overcooking.  We throw away the nutrients that’s in the pot thinking it is the leftovers from the vegetables when we really should use it in other forms of our cooking or drink that juice because there is the content of life, your vitamins have all gone into that water.
Now, what the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan is putting us on a program of going back to the land, agriculture, growing our own food, growing our own herbs because the foods has been contaminated to the degree that we have engineered genetics going on.  Soon we will not be able to have the seeds that we need to grow live food; they will all be genetically engineered and farmers will have to buy these seeds that will never regenerate again; they’re dead, they’re gone.  We are eating THAT kind of food as opposed to live food that we produce with our hands.   Imagine the energy that flows through our blood,  that flows through our hands by touching the earth, by touching the soil.  We are able to pick more energy from touching the earth that has been touched by the sun, by the wind, that has been touched by all the natural elements.

V-What exercises did the Messenger practice and what exercise have you found useful?

Mother Tynnetta-He told me that the best exercise is walking and that the Saviour told him not to sit just within the four walls of a room in a house, but to get out into the air and walk.  Yoga and Tai Chi express our spirituality.  These practices came from the African continent.  Also, he said we should go on drives so that our environment changes.  We were not made to stay inside.  You have to go out to the parks, you have to be in nature.    He also recommended the use of spas, the massages, the oil treatments and taking care of the body and keeping yourself in good shape.  We have been stuck in these cities.  If we can get a little farm land, an acre or half and acre, that’s okay.   If you have to live in an apartment, you can still grow your own food, vegetables and herbs.  Just make use of your space.

V- What benefit have you gotten from reading the Holy Quran once a week?

Mother Tynnetta-  Oh, my.  That’s a big one, but it’s like having a revelation over and over again…you see that which you didn’t see before.  As you live in the world and events are taking place in your life, NS you are traveling and meeting people, you have a sense of inner peace and you are able to communicate in a certain spirit.  The prophet had recommended to read it in a week, not in a day or 3 days.   He suggested 7 days to give your mind and body a chance to receive and absorb the wisdom that is being revealed.   It has past, present and future present tense.  It brings a creativity to you.  You start perceiving reality differently.

V- There was a question posed to me to ask you, “If marriage is half our faith, how can we continue to develop our faith if we are single?  Can we still have full faith without marriage?  I hear people say, “I’m looking for someone to complete me.”   Are two “complete” people coming together to complement one another or are we incomplete until we marry?

Mother Tynnetta – I really have to answer you the way I am receiving it, but I believe we have been misinformed.  I’m not saying that it is not half, but we have been misinformed on how to execute and orientate ourselves properly in a married state or a single state.    There is a missing key here, the philosophy of marriage, the philosophy of maintaining and complementing yourself with a spouse.  Yes, I am aware that Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) said the marriage is half of your religion.  When we say, “faith,” I see something else.  If you say “religion,” I see something else.  Most of us in America, in the of the Black family have been so mistreated in terms of family life.  Our families have been separated since slavery, we don’t even know all of our relatives.  Our idea of marriage, the way we perceive it now has been discolored.  Marriage is an institution that was established by almighty God(Allah).

We read in the 49th Surah that Allah made for us tribes and clans and family relations and marriages so that we can get to know one another.  In that careful evolution from tribe to clan to family and then to marriage partners is a process that we, Black people in America, particularly do not have the sense of confidence of what those relationships actually mean and how they perfect our religion, how they perfect our faith.  We are, if I may say it this way, very “self-centered”   and a bit selfish and we are not able to grasp this great institution that will bring to us the sacrifice we will have to make.  We have difficulty because we are following a corrupted example in this society.  We have been the victims of their mischief making and therefore we do not have a healthy approach to marriage.

I feel we should have GREAT marriage counseling.   Not just for the couples that are about to marry or just about to go into courtship and then we suddenly a wedding is announced and six months, nine months later, a divorce is announced.     Something is missing. That something that is missing is the reality of who we are and how we ought to be.   Only Islam as taught by The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, in my humble opinion, gives us the basis for starting right, getting relations correct, getting everything right.  You focus on God; focus on your studies. The Holy Quran says if you do not have that mate, you pray for that mate and the time and God will give you what you need at the proper time and you will be the recipient of just what you have been asking for, but it takes patience, endurance and skill.

V- I agree.  Thank you Mother Tynnetta.  As Salaam Alaikum.

What to Do for a Healthy and Better YOU!

Torchlight Tips:  Good Guidance for All!
By Audrey Muhammad

Would you like to have a healthier and more joyful life?  Did you know there were 8 great tips that a man of God gave us several years ago that will absolutely help us have a healthier and happier existence.  In 1993, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan wrote, A Torchlight for America, a monumental book that gave guidance on Education, Relationship and the economy of America.  It also gave a list of some of the best tips for health and fitness that I have ever seen.  (The book may be ordered at www.store.finalcall.com)

Most of the tips on eating were based on the book How to Eat to Live, which explains how eatng the pig/pork “destroys the beauty of the body’s appearance.” In his “preventive care guidelines,” Minister Farrakhan gives 8 “steps on pages 145-148 of Torchlight for America. (Note:  His words are in quotation marks at the beginning each numbered item below).

  1. First, you must pray.  You must let the Author of all existence into your life…it’s prayer that feeds and strengthens your desire, and desire feeds the will”(145).  We often pray for the car or house we want, but do we pray for the healthy body we desire.  Or do we see it as a ‘lost cause’ or ‘this is just the way I am.’  God will help give us the determination.  I recently tried a Crossfit Workout which incorporates using heavy weights for deadlifts, squats and muscle ups.  I was not sure how I was going to get through the workout, but I found myself asking Allah for strength.  It wasn’t that I couldn’t do the workout, I didn’t initially BELIEVE I could.  It felt GREAT afterwards.  Allah(God) says in Surah 40-60, “Pray to me, I will answer you.”  PRAY.
  2. Second, you must imbue yourself with knowledge.  You need knowledge.  You must not take pride in what you think you already know” (145).  Along with reading new books and magazines on fitness, I am re-reading How to Eat to Live Book I.  I am finding so many “jewels” of wisdom and guidance that I didn’t recognize before.  Also, one of the BEST nutrition books out there is the MGT’s new How to Cook book.  It is a WONDERFUL resource.  (Student Captain Sister Sandy and her staff are doing a wonderful job).  Knowledge of foods is a wonderful motivator to eat or stop eating a certain food.
  3. Third, strive to eat to live instead of eating inordinately and improperly in an attempt to deal with stress or to entertain yourself”(146).   One book I read years ago, the author described overeating as “an act of violence” upon yourself.  Wow…think about that…stuffing yourself….making yourself so full you are uncomfortable and even in PAIN.   That’s deep.  Treat yourself and your body with, as The Honorable Elijah Muhammad says, “The best food money can buy.”
  4. Fourth, we must exercise….At a minimum, walking a few miles each day is one of the best forms of exercise”(147).  Walking is an easy, low impact exercise that anyone can do almost anywhere.  It is also a wonderful mood uplifter and stress reducer along with dancing, aerobics, swimming and other forms of exercise.
  5. Fifth, get rid of your addictions.  That is drugs, alcohol, smoking and extra-marital sex.  In Islam, the religion of submission to the will of God, fasting is prescribed as a way to cleanse the body, but also as a means of fortifying the will…So try fasting as a way to build your will so that you can rid yourself of addictions before your addictions rid the Earth of you”(147).  I am currently working on reducing the sugar in my diet.  Sugar is very additive, is high in calories and weakens the immune system.  I feel a lot better when I am not consuming sugary drinks and food daily.  My energy and spirit is wonderful and I am a lot “sweeter” when I am “sugar-free.  (Smile.)
  6. Sixth, get proper rest and relaxation.  Allow your body time to recuperate from the emotional stress and physical exertion of the day, and to re-energize itself to meet the challenges of the next day.  Relax yourself by breaking your daily routine with some joyful activity that frees your mind of life’s stresses and strains”(147).  What are some ways to relax?  Not getting on Facebook or gossiping on the phone, but enjoying knitting, playing golf or reading a good book in the sun, which leads to the next suggestion that the Minister gives which is to get some sun.
  7. “Seventh, you should spend a little time in the sun and communing with nature.  Too much sun is not good for you.  But limited exposure to the sun is good for the body…it emits vitamin-filled rays that are absorbed through the skin, helping the body to defend itself against disease”(148).  It is a wonderful feeling to have “sun-kissed” skin and have the sun gently warm your spirit and help you obtain Vitamin D.
  8. Eighth, and finally, you should make sure that your and your family get regular dental and physical checkups….You may feel that these simple guidelines for healthful living are too restricting and don’t leave you free to enjoy life”(148).  Think how restricting life would be if we had a life-threatening disease we could have prevented

The Minister has said before that “there’s nothing more powerful than a made-up mind.”  So, make up your mind to get healthier and happier today.  We can do it!  May Allah bless us all with peace, health, wealth, love and happiness.

Get Fit Tip:  Replace juices and sugary drinks with water.

How to Set Worthy Goals:  Where do I Start?
Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal, but didn’t know where to start?  Do you want to improve your education or just get to work on time?  Having a “worthy goal” is key vital to having success in life.

“What is the value of a worthy goal?  It is your innate God potential actualized,” said Polymin Muhammad, a London counselor and the co-author of the book, How to Set Worthy Goals: An Inspirational Guide to Achieving Success.  He collaborated with the Editor of Virtue Magazine, Audrey Muhammad, to develop a book that combines some of the best principles of motivation and guidance for goal-setting.

One young woman was inspired by the book after working on it at the printing company.  “It has given me hope,” she said.  “How to Set Worthy Goals:  An Inspirational Guide to Achieving Success,” was the perfect push to get myself set on the right path for personal success as well as reconnect with my spiritual side.  Audrey helped me to realize the potential and value that I have as a woman, an individual as well as a professional”(K. Moore- Cary, NC).

What was the inspiration for this workbook?  Several years ago, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan sent out an "inspirational" video that challenged brothers and sisters to develop their faith and set goals.  He asked the question "What is the problem with our "lack of productivity?"  What is the problem with our lack of doing great exploits? Why haven't we conquered the country already, after having sixty years of having the word of God in our midst?  What has slowed us down?  It is lack of belief in Allah!   Do you know what your problem is? You don't even have a worthy goal to strive after?”  In the video, he gave us an assignment to close our eyes, visualize a goal and then claim it.  The book has an inspirational section for achieving spiritual, health, family and financial/economic goals.

God says, "Be! And it is!" Do you know there is power and energy in the words that we speak?  In the beginning was what?  "The Word" and the word was God and the word was with God.  The words we think are part of the power that channels our actions to get something accomplished.  Therefore, are we speaking words of life, light, and power? OR are we just thinking about and talking about what we don't have?   If we change the words we think, we will change the WAY we live our life.  Remember, our “Father” is a “Creator.”  We are meant to believe, conceive and achieve what we create in our minds to be of service to humanity.  We are creators…we are destined to create.
“There is no better feeling that exists than when you achieve a worthy goal,” said Brother Polymin.  It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, black or white, everyone wants to achieve and accomplish something, but we just need to know how or what practical steps to help facilitate achievement.   Here is what Dr. Ava Muhammad said about the publication:  "In reference to the book, How to Set Worthy Goals, this is translating faith into action.  When we write, we activate one of the highest parts of our brain.  We are thereby motivated to bring our ideas into reality.  Get this book!"  -Dr. Ava Muhammad(Oct. 4, 2014)

What is wonderful about the book is that it immediately encourages you to get to work with exercises in practical applications such as “developing a vision board,” or “listing qualities you want to improve in yourself.”  The book also acts as a “workbook” because it has plenty of room to write down your goals and the steps to achieving the goal to help you stay on track.

Maxine Muhammad, of London’s Mosque #1, highly recommended the book via Facebook recently.  She said the book was a “really good tool.”  She stated, “Writing down each step to achieve my goals in this book is really helpful.”

The authors conducted a wonderful “vision planning/goal setting” workshop at London’s Mosque #1 “Live Right to Get Right” Conference and was met with an impressive response of gratitude from participants.  Several participants also attended the “one on one” goal setting sessions given by the authors.  “Knowledge of self must always lead to self improvement and can with the right methods,” says Polymin Muhammad.  The authors are available to conduct workshops on Goal-setting for your organization, mosque or church.

(To order the book, send a check or money order for $8.99 to Virtue Magazine, P.O. D-Diet Unchained!

“D-Diet Unchained”
Get Fit to Live Column
By Audrey Muhammad

Bismillah.

Have you ever learned something from a book or tape and couldn’t wait to put it into practice?  How will you know if works unless you put it into practice?  The Honorable Elijah Muhammad states in Book II of How to Eat to Live, “I am often experimenting as I teach you, so that I will know what happens if you go contrary to the teachings of “How to Eat to Live (p.28 Final Call vol. 27 ).   For years, many of us, especially Black people living in America, have been “chained” to a diet and way of life that leads us to a slow and sometimes fast path to death.  However, as we see this “way of life” and the detrimental world falling, there is a “last ditch” effort now being made to extend the lives of those in the “old world order.”  If you have read the How to Eat to Live Books or even the How to Eat to Live column in the Final Call, you have been well equipped with a wealth of knowledge to extend your life.

Recently,  I was reading a book on enhancing your beauty that was recommended by Dr. Oz and had a “deja vu” moment thinking, “Where have I heard this before?”  The book entitled The Beauty Detox Solution stated, “It is commonly believed we should eat small meals often to keep our metabolism up and stabilize blood sugar.  The truth, however, is that eating often is a sure way to age faster….Every time we eat, digestion has to be kicked back up, and so does the consumption of our body’s precious enzymes.  Constantly grazing[snacking] throughout the day is a sure way to burn our body’s enzymes more quickly…and speed up the aging process”(Snyder 60).  All this does is bear witness to what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad stated in How to Eat to Live about the importance of eating “one meal a day” and retaining our beauty appearance.  His information, which he received from Allah God in Person, is a very important point to remember. In How to Eat To Live Book I, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad states, “The foolish idea of eating three or four times a day-and all between meals—is like the poisonous swine who never has any regular eating habit.  Even a dog will not eat when he is full most of the time”(30).

As I am flipping through the book, I run across another sections that said, “Cut out the soda!...Soda consumed regularly will demineralize our teeth and rob us of our beauty by eating up the precious minerals that create it.(Snyder 26).  In How to Eat To Live, Book I which was published many years earlier states, “You should not even drink a lot of soda pop.  Some intelligent people will not drink one bottle of soda pop”(111).

Once you know some body of knowledge, then what?  We are supposed to put our mathematical theology to work…act on it.  When we don’t properly use or apply our knowledge, we suffer.  We are given “authority” over our bodies and have been given a wonderful “body of knowledge” to help us properly care for our bodies.  “Eating to live,” thinking “good thoughts” and exercising are key components in “getting fit to live.”

Why is physical activity so important?  “Every part of your body depends on regular physical activity.  When a specific part of the body is put into action, the body responds by sending more blood, nutrients, and energy to that area.  This response leads to an overall improvement in the health and vitality of the particular part involved.  If exercise is neglected, the body will become weak and all its physical powers will be diminished, but with regular exercise the entire system will be strengthened and invigorated. (Fit for Life II: Living Health, Diamond  143).

Remember, belief accounts for nothing unless carried into practice.  Every belief must be followed by an action.  What do our actions indicate about our belief?  Get “unchained” and let go of the “death diet.”

May Allah(God) bless us all with peace, love, health, wealth and happiness.

Prepare to Survive: It's "Time" to Get a "Go Bag"

In light of the recent tornados and disasters in Texas and Kansas, we may want to move at a “faster pace” and prepare if a disaster comes our way.

In Surah 3:48 The Holy Qu-ran states .. “and I inform you of what you should eat and what you should store in your houses. Surely there is a sign in this for you, if you are believers. This is 1000% percent right and exact! Besides the staples of navy beans and water, the items that we have in our “Shelter In-Place” kits should not be confused with our “72 hour-bags also known as “Go-Bags”. We must be prepared for the reality that we will be instructed to evacuate at a moments notice. Remember, more often than ever people are becoming displaced after suffering the effects of severe weather conditions and other catastrophes.  This reality has led to a growing realization of the need of preparedness and is becoming more common and has even tricked into main stream media. The highly popular television show, “Doomsday Preppers” is such an example.

As a bare minimum, our bags should include food, along with some method to warm or cook it, clothing, and shelter. Our food storage such include fresh, frozen, home canned, store canned, dehydrated and freeze dried. The last two forms of food storage are actually the best options for our go bags as they are extremely light weight, take up very little space as well as maintain a long shelf life. Unfortunately our home canned foods are contained in glass and not the best option to travel with, but perfect for of shelter in place kits. Our clothing should be winter weather appropriate. If evacuated during the summer pants and shirt sleeves can be rolled up a bit or cut and used for bandages or tie-ups. Lastly, our shelter should include a blanket and tarp as a bare minimum.

Since the time of the earthquake in Haiti, Allah(God) has placed it on my heart that I assist the Believers and our community in regards to disaster preparedness. This has been intensified by several events including, the words of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan regarding the recent Hurricane and Nor'ester, along with other personal factors. As mentioned above, there is an immediate need to secure our go bags, however, due to the fall of the dollar, most of us are not in the financial position to spend hundreds of dollars to build our go bags all at once. A.L.E. Disaster Supplies has developed a 13 week $10 and/or $20 payment plan to purchase supplies.

The $10 a week plan includes:

Vigilance Basic Go Bag

Cooking Method

Water Purification Method

Fleece Sleeping Bag

2 Fleece Sleeping Bags

2 Mess Kit

2 Head Lamps

2 Pouch of Dehydrated or Freeze Dried Vegetables
